Shirley L. Harris , 97, former long-time resident of Rock Island, passed away Monday, December 21st, at Sierra Vista, in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Live-broadcasted graveside services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 28, at Hebrew Cemetery, Rock Island, (and may be viewed at https://vimeo.com/494282379 ). Those attending are asked to observe current public gathering requirements. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island, is assisting the family with arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the Quad City Symphony.
A Daughter of Morris and Jessie Leiberman, she was born July 10, 1923 in Chicago. Before her marriage, she attended Northwestern University, the Chicago Art Institute and the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. She married Zeivel Dockterman Harris in 1945 in Chicago, who preceded her in death. A life-long volunteer and patron of the arts, Shirley participated in the American Women's Service Organization bond drives during World War II; various volunteer activities at St Anthony's Hospital (now Trinity); the Tri-City Symphony Auxiliary, serving as president (now the Volunteers for the Quad City Symphony Orchestra). She also served on the boards of the Quad City Symphony Orchestra and the Rock Island Art Guild. She was a supporter of the Music Students Etude Club, the Rock Island Public Library and various civic, arts and music projects. Shirley was a member of Congregation Beth Israel at the Tri-City Jewish Center, Rock Island. and Beth Israel Sisterhood. She was a Life Member of Hadassah. In earlier years, she was Youth Aliyah Chair, working with young people. For many years, Shirley and Zeivel Harris enjoyed the many arts and music offerings of the Quad Cities, and in their travels outside the country. In her later years, she was grateful to be blessed by the care and support from myriad loving friends and professionals. The family is deeply grateful to both of the wonderful staffs of Crossroads Aging and of Sierra Vista, whose loving care allowed Shirley to thrive in her last years. Shirley is survived by her children, Susan Harris of Santa Fe, Daniel J. Harris and his wife Diane Lease of New Orleans, her sister Rosalyn Friedman, nieces Diane Weiss (Paul), Sylvia Taflove (Allen), and nephew Irwin Friedman (Debbie). Also, nephews Steven Katz (Katia) and Matthew Katz (Steve Sokany).
