Sister Catherine Patricia Ann Maloney, OSB, 90, of St. Mary Monastery, Rock Island, IL, passed away Thursday November 18, 2021 at the monastery.
A private live-streamed Mass of Christian burial will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 22, in the Chapel of St. Mary Monastery, Rock Island. The Mass will be streamed through the Benedictine Sisters of St. Mary Monastery Facebook page. A private visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, November 21, at the monastery, with a private Christian wake service at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan, IL, is assisting with arrangements. Memorials may be made to St. Mary Monastery, Rock Island.
Catherine Patricia Ann Maloney was born May 11, 1931 in Estherville, Iowa, a daughter of James Edward and Mildred Candace Truesdell Maloney. She graduated from St. Mary's Grade School and High School, Moline, IL. Sister Catherine received her Bachelor of Arts degree in education from St. Ambrose University, Davenport, IA, and her Master's degree in education from University of Illinois, Champaign, IL She received her certificate in Theology from St. Norbert's College, De Pere, WI. Sister Catherine entered the Benedictine community on August 15, 1949, and made her final profession as a Benedictine sister on August 24, 1954.
Sister Catherine taught in grade schools in Illinois at Atkinson, Clinton, Peoria, Monmouth, Wenona, Chicago and Alleman High School, Rock Island and St. Mary's Academy, Nauvoo. She also taught in Munster, IN. She spent 25 years in Pastoral Care at Methodist Medical Center, Peoria, IL, Franciscan Medical Center, Rock Island, and Illinois Valley Community Hospital, LaSalle, IL as Hospice Chaplain, St. Augustine Manor, Peoria, in support to the elderly and Hospice volunteer at Genesis Hospital in Davenport, Iowa.
Sister Catherine is survived by her Benedictine Sisters; her brother, Thomas Maloney; her sister, Mary Elizabeth Walsh; and nieces and nephews.
Sister was preceded in death by her parents, J. Edward and Mildred; mom who raised her, Mary Mortensen Maloney; her twin, Nancy Ann Gilhooly and her sister, Maureen Patricia Porter.
