Stanley D. Flowers, 83, of Moline, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 2016 at his home.
Funeral services are 11 am on Saturday at the Pentecostal Church of God, Davenport. Burial is at Riverside Cemetery, Moline. Visitation is 9 am until service time Saturday at the Church. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island is assisting the family. Memorials may be made to the Penetecostal Church of God or to the American Heart Association.
Stanley Dois Townsley was born to Laverta Davis and Jewel Townsley on June 26, 1932 in Paducah, Kentucky. At age two years, he was adopted to Aunt and Uncle Hugh and Edna Flowers. He moved, at age nine years, to Rock Island, Illinois.
Stanley graduated from Rock Island High School in June 1950. He worked as a pinsetter from age 14 to age 16. Then worked through high school at Iowa Illinois Gas and Electric Company which was later named Bituminous Casualty Insurance Company. Then he worked at Burger Motor Ford in Rock Island. Then on to the Rock Island Arsenal from November 1950 until October 1953. He attended Body and Fender School in Shreveport, Louisiana. Meanwhile, he worked at Shreveport Memorial Hospital in the Burn and Physiotherapy Ward. Stanley worked at V C. Fertilizer, and then as a porter at ALAMO PLAZA TOURIST COURT. After two years,
Stanley graduated with a diploma from TEXAS AVE. BODY AND FENDER School in
Shreveport.
Stanley moved backed to Rock Island, Illinois and went to work for DEERE HARVESTER COMPANY in East Moline. He began working in the foundry in January 1953. Stanley married Ruby Velva Jean Hayslett on August 8, 1959. He worked at John Deere for 34 years, retiring September 1987. Meanwhile, Stanley worked at a number of hotel and restaurants.
After retiring, Stanley worked at Johannes Bus Service. At the same time, he worked for Rock Island School District 41. He then worked at T.J. Maxx and LUTHERAN Adult Care Center.
Mr. and Mrs. Flowers moved to Palmdale, California in 1997, and lived there until January 2001. Stanley worked at the Palmdale School District while living there. After moving back to Rock Island, Stanley worked at FORT ARMSTRONG RESIDENT CARE CENTER and worked and retired from the R.I.HA. in July 2003. He also worked at the Quad City International Airport from 2008 until 2012.
Stanley was a member of the Active Club and a member of the U.A.W. 865. He attended the Methodist Church as a child and was a member of Pentecostal Church of God. Stanley helped to establish Flowers and Flowers, Incorporated and The Golden Agers in the Palmdale, California School District.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby and four children; Rodney L. (Anitra) Flowers, Phyllis D. Flowers, Regina D. Flowers, La'Ionia S. Peterson; 16 grandchildren,
26 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, and a host of sister and brother in-laws, special nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Stanley was preceded in death by his parents; Hugh and Edna Flowers; a half-brother, Hubert Townsley; and a grandson, Rodney DeShay Flowers.
