Stephanie "Steph" L. Smith, 76, of Moline, passed away on Sunday, October 19, 2025, at Hope Creek Nursing and Rehab, East Moline.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, 2810 5th Ave, Rock Island. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Friday, October 24, 2025, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7th Ave, Rock Island, with a rosary to be recited at 3:00 pm. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials may be left in care of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Rock Island or the Rock Island Fraternal Order of Eagles Charity Fund. The family has requested that attendees of both the visitation and funeral wear purple in honor of Steph.
Steph was born on November 3, 1948, in Moline, IL, a daughter of Leon and Vada (Ryan) Simoens. She graduated Alleman High School in 1966 and later married her high school sweetheart, Mike Smith, on June 29, 1968. Steph worked as a cook at the Villa De Chantal in Rock Island for several years before later becoming a travel agent.
Steph was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Rock Island. She was very active within the church and was a part of many groups including the choir, sodality, and the social activity committee. She was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Rock Island, where she served as Madam President seven times of the Rock Island Auxiliary, Illinois State President 1988-89, Regional State President (IL/IN) and International Grand Madam President (GMP) 2006-07. During her year as GMP she traveled the United States doing exciting things like participating in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and helping to put flowers on a Rose Bowl Parade float. Her passion was raising money and supporting various charities, including her GMP project raising over a half million dollars for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. During her time as a travel agent, Steph organized and chaperoned many tours including traveling on the Delta Queen which was a highlight in her many travel adventures.
Steph's hobbies included cooking, collecting angels, buying scratch off lottery tickets, traveling, and enjoying ice cream and chocolate. She had the chance to visit all 50 states and most of Canada throughout her life. Above all else, Steph enjoyed time spent with family and friends, especially her grandsons.
Those left to cherish Steph's memory include her husband, Mike Smith; son, Tim (Michele) Smith; grandsons, Daniel and Isaac Smith; sister, Sandy Simoens; "Eagles sister", Roxie; friends, Ron and Judy; and the numerous Sacred Heart and Eagle friends so dear to her.
Steph was preceded in death by her parents.
A special thanks for the exceptional care the nurses and doctors at Encompass, Hope Creek and the Unity Point ICU provided.
