Steven B. Gorter, 71, East Moline, IL passed away on Monday, June 23, 2025 at UnityPoint-Trinity Hospital in Rock Island, IL. There will be a visitation from 10-11:00 AM with a memorial service following at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 28, 2025 at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to Breakthrough T1D.

Steve was born on February 22, 1954 to Jerry and Muriel (Holland) Gorter in Fort Belvoir, VA. His dad was in the military so they moved frequently before finally settling in Moline. After he graduated from Moline High School, he spent a few years working for the railroad before starting his career as a salesman. He worked at Montgomery Ward selling fencing and later, appliances, until 2001 when the company went out of business. Steve then began his employment at Home Depot where he worked in the appliance department until his retirement.

In 1979, Steve was united in marriage to Cheryl Romine at Christ United Methodist Church in East Moline. The couple made their home and raised their daughter in East Moline. Steve and Cheryl loved to travel, especially going on cruises.

In his spare time, Steve was an avid woodworker. In their home he built all of their kitchen cabinets and did the stairwell, doors, and trim. He also built their bed and dressers. His favorite thing to do was spend time with his family, and he especially enjoyed watching his grandsons play baseball and soccer.

He will be greatly missed by his wife of 45 years, Cheryl; daughter, Sarah (Karl) Schenk; grandsons, Eli and Quinn Schenk; brother, Howard Gorter; and beloved bulldog, Hank.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Susan Gorter.
