Steven Michael Krug Sr., 68, of Rock Island, IL passed away on Friday, June 26, 2026 at his home under the care of hospice and surrounded by family. There will be a visitation from 4:00-6:00 PM on Wednesday, July 1, 2026 at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Milan. A memorial service will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, July 2, at the funeral home. Inurnment with military honors will be at Rock Island National Cemetery.
Steve was born on February 19, 1958, in Rock Island, to Eugene and Hilda (Faber) Krug. His love of cars and anything with an engine began at an early age, building model cars, boats, and airplanes. After graduating from Rock Island High School, he served in the United States Air Force, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. Upon completing his service in the military, he began a lifelong career in the automotive industry, working as a mechanic and automotive technician for several area businesses, including Shawn's Auto Service in Bettendorf, Iowa.
Steve also loved people. He was known for his playful sense of humor, always teasing and ready with a joke or a laugh, but just as willing to lend a helping hand. Later in life, he pursued a nursing degree and was just shy of earning his R.N. before health issues forced him to retire.
On May 15, 1976 he was united in marriage to Suzan Frees at St. Pius X in Rock Island. They lived in California during his time in the Air Force, stationed at George Air Force base near Victorville, California where their son Steve Jr was born. They also lived in AZ briefly but largely made their home in Rock Island where they raised their son.
Steve was an avid and proud gear head. When he wasn’t fixing cars at work, he was tinkering with them at home and for friends. He rebuilt a 1970 Chevy Nova among other hot rods and was in the process of building a racecar with the majority of the car being custom built by himself. He also enjoyed target and skeet shooting and continued as long as he could. An excellent marksman, Steve was taught by his dad and later enjoyed shooting with his own son. Steve also passed down his love of music. He taught himself to play guitar before he was a teenager and later learned piano, drums, and many other instruments. He was a member of many area bands over the years, most notably High Street, DB Cooper, and Crippled Hippie. He enjoyed writing music as well as performing cover songs and loved opportunities to sit in and jam with different musicians in the area.
He will be greatly missed by his wife, Suzan; mother, Hilda; son, Steve (Jody) Krug Jr., grandchildren, Shelby, Abby and Nathan Krug; brother, Michael (Sandra) Krug; and his beloved dog, Thor.
He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene; and sister, Denise Lofgren.
