Steven Strupp, 77, of East Moline, passed away on June 8, 2026. He was one of a kind, and anyone who knew him would tell you that without hesitation, and probably follow it up with a story.
For over 40 years, he worked in the Trinity Hospital system, where he found his passion as a case manager in mental health, a job he loved and one that said everything about who he was. He showed up for people - not just his family, but anyone who needed someone in their corner.
In the 1980s and '90s, while most dads were out coaching Little League, he was doing something far more unusual: running the PTA. Twice. As president. He was typically the only man in a room full of mothers and seemed to think nothing of it. He also served as past president of the East Moline Public Library Board, a fitting role for a man who loved reading and devoured multiple books a week.
His greatest gift was simply showing up. Together with his wife of 50 years, Beverly, he never missed an art exhibit, Grandparents Day, baseball game, or school play. If it mattered to his family, it mattered to him.
His sense of humor ranged from the groan-worthy dad joke to the impressively dark, sometimes within the same sentence. He was a storyteller with a tale for every situation, a man who never met a stranger and was happiest in the middle of a good conversation. Which was most of the time.
He was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan, reliably spotted in his Cubs hat through decades of heartbreak and, eventually, one very satisfying World Series. He was also an original member of the Valley Sports Car Club, a chapter of his life that began alongside his father. In his father's later years, Saturday mornings became a standing date with the group he affectionately called his Old Guy Group - coffee, conversation, and exactly the kind of company he loved best.
He was immensely proud of his children and loved watching them find their own way. That pride only deepened with his grandchildren, whom he adored. He especially loved the moment each one got old enough to really sit down and talk with him. Those conversations meant everything.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly; his daughter, MacKenzie Jackson (Tom); his son, Christopher Strupp (Iris Overstreet Strupp); his grandchildren, Brenden, Alex, and Ellis; and his sisters, Kristine Anthony, Hadee Wood, and Betty Shellabarger. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother.
The stories will outlast him, which, knowing Steve, was probably the plan all along.
And he wanted to note, he beat Skip.
A memorial visitation to celebrate Steve's life will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 pm on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the East Moline Public Library. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.wheelanpressly.com.
