IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sumiko "Sami"
(Kanazawa) Mayfield
February 15, 1927 – January 24, 2017
Sumiko "Sami" Mayfield, 89, of Rock Island, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2017 at her home. A private memorial service will be held on Monday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island. Public visitation is 2 to 4 on Sunday. Inurnment will be at the National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Sumiko was born Feb. 15, 1927 in Tochigi-Ken, Japan. She married Raymond F. Mayfield on Aug. 15, 1958 in Tokyo, Japan. He died Nov. 29, 1973. She graduated from college with a Bachelor's degree in accounting. Sumiko retired from Seaford Clothing, Rock Island. Sumiko entered the United States with her husband and son, on November 29, 1964 in Sacramento, Calif., from Tokyo. Thus started the amazing journey to Rock Island which she eventually called her home. Raising two sons on her own after the passing of her husband in 1973. She endured and won a bout with cancer and strove to better her family's lives. Sumiko lived and retired as a true Rock island native surrounding herself with many friends of diversity whom she cherished. Known as Sami to her close friends, she enjoyed the simplest of life. From her plants, her dogs, playing Bingo, and her Chicago Cubs! Sami was a lifelong member of the "Die Hard Cubs" fan club, she relished and endured the ups and downs of her Cubs, and her Bears. But most of all, she embraced her sons and grandchildren, whom she nourished with all the history of their heritage. It was the lessons she gave her family of the ability to see the pleasures in the most simplest of gestures, of things to cherish and to let it be known of her gratitude. This is her legacy that will be carried on by her sons and grandchildren. Survivors include her daughter, Julia Mayfield, Japan; sons, Elmer Mayfield (Candice Schultz), Comanche, Iowa and Raymond Mayfield (Becky Wolking), Rock Island; grandchildren, Tyson Mayfield, Meghan Rosas, Ryan Mayfield and Nikkoli Mayfield; and great grandchildren, Mateo and Emilio Rosas. Heartfelt thanks to her stepdaughter, Leola Simmons for the care and love given to Sumiko during her illness. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond; a brother and sister.
