Susan I. "Sue" Schafer, 84, of Bettendorf passed away Monday, Nov. 17, 2014 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.
Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport. Burial is at Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island is assisting the family. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Susan I. Nehlsen was born Aug. 3, 1930 in Davenport, the daughter of Arthur and Sadie Horst Nehlsen. She married Cleyon E. Schafer on Apr. 16, 1950 at St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Sue graduated from Davenport High School and attended Augustana College. She worked for 20 years as a secretary at Frank L. Smart Junior High, Davenport.
She was a life-long active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and served in many of the church's organizations. Sue was also a member of the PEO Sisterhood Chapter LH and the Sigma Pi Delta Sorority. Sue enjoyed traveling, spending winters in Florida and especially loved her family and being with them and her friends.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of nearly 65 years, Cleyon; sons and daughters-in-law, David and Wynne Schafer, Davenport, John Schafer and Sue Ellingson, Madison, Wis., Jeffrey and Marilee Schafer, Eldridge, and Dan and Margaret Schafer, Houston, Tex.; grandchildren, Eric, Tara, Michael, Shawn, Chad, Kirk, and Daniel; and great-grandchildren, Eli, Luke, Benjamin and William. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Edward, Art and Bill Nehlsen.
