Born on August 25, 1946, in Jerome, Arkansas, Susie was the beloved daughter of Nathan and Linard (Coakley) Nelson. From a young age, Susie carried a gentle strength, a kind heart, and a deep desire to care for others—qualities that shaped every chapter of her life.
After graduating high school, Susie followed her calling into nursing, earning her certification from Black Hawk College. She began her career at St. Anthony's Hospital and later continued her service at Trinity Medical Center. Over the course of 40 dedicated years, she became known not only for her exceptional skill but also for her compassion, her steady presence, and the quiet way she made every patient feel seen and valued. She was also an active member of numerous hospital committees, always striving to uplift her profession and the people around her.
Susie's faith was an important part of her life. She was a devoted member of Olivet Baptist Church in Rock Island, where she found fellowship, comfort, and a strong sense of community.
Outside of her career, Susie embraced life with creativity and joy. She had a true passion for crafting and proudly organized a Christmas craft show each year—a tradition that brought people together and showcased her artistic spirit. She loved traveling, especially cruises and all-inclusive trips throughout the Caribbean, where she could relax, explore, and enjoy the beauty of the world.
Above all, Susie cherished the time she spent with her family and friends. Her warmth, humor, generosity, and unwavering love were gifts she shared freely, leaving an imprint on everyone blessed to know her.
Those left to honor her memory include her children, Sandra Krantz, Yolanda Wright, Adrienne Wright, and Andre Wright; along with her ten grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Lynne Nelson; a host of nieces and nephews; and countless work friends who truly became like family.
Susie was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Ruthie Mae Johnson, Nathan Nelson Jr., and Samuel Edward Nelson; and her granddaughter, Brieanna Wright.
Susie will be deeply missed and forever remembered for her kindness, her devotion, and the beautiful life she lived.
