Obituary

Thomas Merle Clark, 86, was called home to the Lord surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on January 5, 1940, in Buffalo, New York, Thom lived a life defined by unwavering faith, dedication to his family, and a strong work ethic. Thom was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife, Joan Clark, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and memories. He leaves behind a family who will forever cherish his memory: his daughters, Kimberly Allen (James) and Cory Skahill (Nathan); his son, Scott Clark (Lori); his beloved grandchildren, Jacob Allen (Amanda), Tyler Allen (Kasey), Tommy Skahill, Jenna Clark (Corey), Molly Skahill, Maddie Appel; and his treasured great-grandchildren, Henry, Charlotte, Annie, and Jackson. He is also survived by his ever-faithful Goldendoodle, Dolly, who rarely left his side.

A devoted Catholic, Thom was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Church. His faith guided him throughout his life and was a source of strength and comfort. Thom dedicated 35 years of service to the Burlington Northern Railroad as a signal maintainer, taking great pride in his work and the friendships he made along the way. He found joy in the outdoors throughout every season of life. In his younger years, he enjoyed running marathons, and in more recent years, he was happiest spending quiet hours sitting on his deck with Dolly by his side. More than anything, Thom treasured time with his family. Whether sharing stories, celebrating milestones, or simply enjoying one another’s company, those moments meant the world to him. Thom will be remembered for his kind heart, his steadfast faith, his quiet strength, and the love he gave so freely to those around him. His family will forever smile when they hear his signature expression, “Oh Pickles!”—a simple phrase that perfectly captured his good humor and has become a treasured reminder of the man they loved.

The family takes comfort in knowing that Thom has been reunited with Joan in the presence of the Lord. His love, faith, and the memories he created—including the familiar smile that followed his favorite words, “Oh Pickles!”—will remain in their hearts forever. Though he has been called home, the example he set through his devotion to God, his family, and a life well lived will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know and love him. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Thom’s memory to the Sacred Heart Food Pantry, Rock Island, Illinois, continuing his legacy of faith, compassion, and caring for others.
