Charles G. Van De Sampel Sr., 85 of Milan, died Saturday, Nov. 26, 2016 at his home.
Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island. Graveside services will be 1:30 Wednesday at the National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, where military honors will be presented by Milan American Legion Post 569. Those attending the service should meet at the funeral home by 1 pm on Wednesday to follow to the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Quad City Animal Welfare Center, Milan.
Charles was born Jan. 11, 1931 in Rock Island, a son of Achiel and Norva Romont Van De Sampel. He married Bernice Wojciechowski on Apr. 24, 1954 in Chicago. She died April 23, 1987. Charlie later married Patricia Smith on Jan. 18, 1991 in Florence, Ariz.
He graduated from Rock Island High School in 1948. Charlie worked at Alcoa for 37 years and was a foreman when he retired in 1987.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict. Charlie was a life member of the Milan American Legion Post 569, where he was a Past Commander and served as the Commander of the Honor Guard for many years. He was a member of the Rock Island Conservation Club, past president of the Milan Indian Summer Festival, past president of the former Belgian American Brotherhood, Rock Island and former member of the Milan Optimist Club.
Survivors include his wife, Pat; children, Charles (Jill) Van De Sampel Jr., and Bonnie Marie Kibling, both of Rock Island; step daughters, Shelly (Bob)) Payne, Rock Island, Jody and Judy Fleischman, both of Davenport; five grandchildren; eight step grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; and dear friend, Frank Weber, Coyne Center. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Bernice; and step sons, Kelly Fleischman and Jerry Blanford.
