Verna M. Oetting, 92, of Rock Island died on Wednesday, July 17, 2019 at Silver Cross Nursing Center at Friendship Manor, Rock Island. Funeral services will be at 10 am, Tuesday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Milan, Ill. Visitation is one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Rock Island Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the church or Friendship Manor. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island is assisting the family.Verna was born November 12, 1926 in Story City, Ia. to Walter S. and Belle Olson Bump. She attended schools in Welch, Ok. graduating in 1944. She enrolled in the Army Air Corps Cadet Nursing Program at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Ia. and graduated in 1947 as a RN. She later worked at hospitals in Vinton, Ia., Moline, Ill., and at Oak Glen Nursing Home in Coal Valley, Ill. She married Delbert A. Oetting on February 12, 1949 in Sterling, Ill. They were married 61 years till his death on March 5, 2010. Verna was a long-time member at St. Matthew Lutheran serving on various committees through the years. She and her husband enjoyed traveling especially when visiting their daughter and family in Germany. In later years she did custom seamstress work and also volunteered in the resale shop at the Rock Island Public Library. She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, a sister, and a daughter-in-law. Survivors include sons, Terry Oetting, Rock Island, David (Polly) Oetting, Albuquerque, NM.; daughter, Ann Thueringer, Heidelberg, Germany; granddaughters, Erin Oetting, Enid, Ok., Jamie and Robin Oetting, Albuquerque, NM.; grandson, Kai Thueringer, Heidelberg, Germany; and several nieces and nephews.
