Virgil R. Hofer, 85, of Taylor Ridge, IL, passed away Monday October 20, 2014 at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline.
Services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 201 E. 4th Ave., Milan, IL. Entombment will be at the mausoleum at Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and additional visitation one hour prior to services on Friday. Memorials may be made to the Taylor Ridge United Methodist Church.
Virgil was born September 25, 1929 in Taylor Ridge, IL, a son of Everett E. and Lucy (Zeitler) Hofer. He married Kathryn M. Whitlock on September 9, 1951 in Illinois City, IL.
Virgil farmed for many years in Taylor Ridge. In later years he also was an insurance agent with Country Companies.
He was a lifetime member at Taylor Ridge United Methodist Church, where he was very active in many church activities . He also was an active member of the Farm Bureau Board, served on the Rock Island County Board of Supervisors, and was past master of Andalusia Lodge 516 A.F. & A.M.
Virgil enjoyed spending time with his family, golfing, gardening, and working in his yard.
Surviving are his wife, Kathryn, of Taylor Ridge; daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon (Michael) Coyne, Edwardsville, IL, Phyllis (Michael) Wenthe, Taylor Ridge, IL, and Jeanette (Randy) Kreutner, Hopkinton, IA; grandchildren, Leslie (Robert) Neath, Tracy (Matthew) Van Sickle, Zack Wenthe (Rachel Bowes), Alex (Tori) Wenthe, Tysin Kreutner, Ray Kreutner and Koda Kreutner; great-grandchildren, Luke, Erik, Ellie, Payton, Carson, Brady and Emma; brother, Donald Hofer, Aledo; sister, Katherine Osborn, Reynolds; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Evelyn Burton.
