Obituary

Wanda M. Johnson, 78, of Rock Island, passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City. Services for Wanda will be 10 am, Saturday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030-7th Ave., Rock Island. Visitation will be Friday from 4 pm - 8 pm at the funeral home, where a Women of the Moose service will be conducted at 8 pm. Burial will be in the Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Wanda was born on November 8, 1935 in Monmouth, a daughter of Henry and Florence Scudder Steele. She married William Johnson on April 12, 1957 in Rock Island. Wanda worked at the Rock Island Tobacco Co. for 43 years, retiring in 2001. She was an avid bowler and had served as secretary for several bowling leagues. Wanda was inducted into the United States Bowling Congress Hall of Fame. She received the United States Bowling Congress Life Time Achievement Award in April, 2014. Wanda served as an official for the Women's National Bowling Tournament from 1998 to 2010. The Wanda Johnson Bowling Classic was named in her honor. She was a member of the United States Bowling Congress, First Church of the Nazarene, Rock Island and the Rock Island Moose Lodge.

Survivors include her sons, William Johnson, Rock Island and George (Mitzie) Johnson, Jasper, Alabama; grandchildren, Angie, Jessica "J.J.", Jenna, Sami and Tiffone; seven great grandchildren; a brother, Duane "Dewey" (Carol) Steele, Milan; and a brother in law, Gene Hartsock, Geneseo.
