Wendell A. Oak, 81, of Reynolds, died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014 at his home.
Funeral services are 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Reynolds. Burial is at the Reynolds Cemetery, where military honors will be presented by the Reynolds American Legion Post 1166. Visitation is 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Reynolds Volunteer Fire Department, Orion Christian Church or UnityPoint Hospice.
Wendell was born at home in Taylor Ridge on Oct. 19, 1932, a son of A. Warren and Clara Mae Schmidt Oak. He married Elaine A. Nielsen on Dec. 13, 1953 in Rock Island.
He graduated from the Reynolds High School in 1950. Wendell in early years worked at the International Harvester Corp. Farmall Works then later began his plumbing career working for Virgil Blaser. In 1965 he started Oak Plumbing and Pump Co., Reynolds, a company run by his son Stephen today. Wendell also farmed with his son Stephen in the Reynolds area.
He was a U.S. Army veteran having joined the service just prior to the end of the Korean war. Wendell was a member of the Orion Christian Church, a 54 year member of the Reynolds Volunteer Fire Dept., life member of the Andalusia Masonic Lodge 516 A.F. & A.M. and a member of the Moline Consistory. He enjoyed gardening, camping and watching NASCAR.
Survivors include his wife, Elaine; children, Scott (Rebecca) Oak, Aledo, Stephen (Sherry) Oak, Taylor Ridge, and Sandra Oak-Venable (Frank Venable), Reynolds; grandchildren, Benjamin (Erika) Oak, Andrew (Sylwia) Oak, Cody Oak, Jonathon Oak (fiancee, Samantha Wells), Stephani (Travis) Norris and Chelsy Oak; and great-grandchildren, Audriana, Khloe, Olivia and Brailey. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
