William Martin "Bill" Fox, 88, died June 14, 2014, at his home in Rock Island.
Family and friends are invited to share memories and celebrate the
life and accomplishments of this remarkable husband, brother, uncle,
father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend on Saturday, June
28, from 1-5 pm at an open house in his grandson's home, 1336 31St,
Rock Island. Memorials in honor of Bill Fox may be made to: Heritage
Fifty-Three, 4601 53rd Street, Moline, IL 61265 (a residential center
of The ARC of the Quad City Area.)
Bill was born Aug. 4, 1925, in Tulsa, Okla., to William H. Fox and
Hazel Irene Cardall Fox. He moved to Andalusia, when he was 5 years
old. Bill served in the Navy from 1942 to 1946; this took him from the
shores of Normandy on the eve of the invasion to the Marshall Islands
on the eve of dropping the atomic bomb. He married Dolores I. Shrader
on Aug. 13, 1950.
A bricklayer for over 30 years, he opened Fox Construction in 1960,
and retired in 1990. A love of cooking led Bill to open Cleo's
Restaurant in Milan, in 1964, which he sold to Hardee's in 1977. He
enjoyed cooking original recipes and family feasts his entire life.
Bill was a lifetime member of Illinois Local 6 Bricklayers Union,
active for 61 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Knights of
Pythias, and a founding member of the ARC of the Quad City Area.
Bill is survived by his wife, Dolores I. Fox, Rock Island; sister,
Martha Fox Polsfuss, Pillager, Minn.; daughters, Judi Lee Fox, Moline,
and Jeri Lynn Fox (husband Michael Kuhlman), Elmhurst, Ill.; son,
William C. Fox, Elmhurst; grandchildren, William S. (Kylee) Fox, Rock
Island, Christine and Nicole Kuhlman, and Emily Fox, Elmhurst; and
great-grandson, William Jude Fox, Rock Island. He was preceded in
death by his sister, Gladys Ruby (Sally) Skinner and brother, John H.
Fox.
