Donavon "Don" W. Harris

Donavon “Don” W. Harris, 93, of Rock Island, passed away Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at Hope Creek Care Center, East Moline. ​Funeral service will be held at 10 am, on Monday, July 9, 2018 at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island.  Visitation will be held from 3 pm to 5 pm on Sunday, July 8, 2018 at the funeral home.  Burial will be at National Cemetery, Rock Island, where military honors will be conducted.  Memorials may be made to American Heart Association or American Diabetes Association. ​Don was born on September 6, 1924 in Grant, IA, the son of Charles and Maude (Williams) Harris.  He married Mary Gibbs on May 26, 1950 in Muscatine, she preceded him in death in 2014.  Don was a proud veteran serving in the US Army during WWII.  He was employed at Bear Manufacturing Co., Rock Island as a shipping clerk, retiring in 1981.  Don then went on to work for Blackhawk Federal S/L until 1989, and in 1990 he worked for American Bank in General Maintenance Support. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Rock Island, and a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.  Don and Mary enjoyed camping and was part of several groups that traveled together. Other past times were spent with Markie, his four-legged friend, visits with family and friends and sharing stories, watching NASCAR, searching for the perfect used car, and cheering on the Hawkeyes. Though married life did not bring any children of their own, he was blessed with many special nieces and nephews and their families. ​He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Harris; parents; and 13 brothers and sisters.
