Dorothy “Dot” Gean Blakney Dickerson was born August 4, 1942 in Quitman, MS to Eddie Blakney Sr. and Carolyn Jasper. She transitioned peacefully on Friday, May 27, 2022, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
She received her early education in Shubuta, MS and attended school in Joliet, IL. Dot was a member of Greater Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Rock Island.
She married Alphonso Dickerson, Sr. on March 21, 1960.
Dot was described as an amazing wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed family gatherings, fishing, cooking, bingo, horse races at the QC Downs, playing cards, and going to the casino.
Dot was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, Maymon Lewis Sr.; siblings, Peggy Teamer, Neal and Eddie Blakney, Marc, Marlin, and Maymon Lewis Jr.; and son, Darrell Dickerson.
Left to cherish her memory include her husband, Alphonso Dickerson Sr.; 6 children, Bonnie (Mike) Jacobs, Alphonso (Penetha) Dickerson Jr., Melvin (Ann) Dickerson Sr., Lorraine Young, Willis Dickerson Sr., all of Rock Island, and Larry (Flo) Dickerson, of San Diego, CA; sisters, Sarah Broadnax and Mary Kay Jenkins, both of Joliet; brothers, Bennie Blakney of Rock Island and Neiman Lewis of Milwaukee, WI; sister-in-law, Linda Blakney of Joliet; brother-in-law, Raymond Teamer Sr. of Covington, TN; 27 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
The family thanks the UnityPoint Hospice team, especially Andy Newkirk and Tracy Bier and Almeta “Tina” Smith from At Your Service Homecare for the care given to Dot.
Funeral services are 9 a.m. Saturday, June 11, 2022, at Greater Antioch Baptist Church, Rock Island. Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 10, 2022, at the church. Burial will be in Rock Island Memorial Park Cemetery. The family requests those in attendance to wear face masks.
