Edward “Big Ed” Jawoisz, 93, of Rock Island, passed away Sunday October 10, 2021 at home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 15, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Rock Island. Burial will be at National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. A Rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, October 14, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island, with visitation following from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church, Rock Island or UnityPoint Hospice.
Edward was born March 22, 1928 in Moline, Illinois, a son of John and Jadwiga Zelnio Jawoisz. He graduated from Moline High School, where he was a star basketball player and went to State. He married Elaine M. Scheel on August 12, 1950 in Rock Island.
He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. Following his military service, Edward was a supervisor at the Moline Post Office. He retired after 33 years of service in 1983.
Edward was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Rock Island. He enjoyed going to Jumer’s Casino where he was an Emerald Club member. He was an avid Notre Dame fan.
Surviving are his wife of 71 years, Elaine, of Rock Island; daughters, Jeri (John) Lauer, Rock Island, Jody (Corey) Rivett, Sequim, Wash., and Joni (Jerry) Gates, Phoenix, Ariz.; grandchildren, Tim (Nancy) Lauer, Laura (Zach) Vroman, Emily Jawoisz, Marcus Hawkins and Sara Hawkins; four great grandchildren; brother, Nick Jawoisz, Rock Island; several nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Dorothy Yotts, Ocean Springs, Miss.; and special friends, King Au and Gail Warren, California.
Edward was preceded in death by a daughter, Julie Jawoisz; son, John E. Jawoisz; parents; sister, Helena Jawoisz; and sister-in-law, Carolyn Jawoisz.
