Genevieve Wilson

Mrs. Genevieve Currie Wilson, 82, transitioned this life at Generations Nursing Home in Rock Island, Illinois on September 16, 2021.

Genevieve was born on February 2, 1939, in DeKalb, Mississippi to the union of the late Percy Currie and Myrtle Edwards Currie. Genevieve accepted Christ at Jerusalem Baptist Church at an early age in her hometown of DeKalb. She graduated in 1957 at Whisenton High School. Genevieve moved to Rock Island, Illinois, and married Elijah Kenneth Wilson in May of 1966. She received her certificate as a license practical nurse in 1966 and worked at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Rock Island until 1971. She attended Black Hawk College in Moline, Illinois and majored in computer programming where she also worked as an office assistant for 20 years. Genevieve was a member and served in several capacities at the Third Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Rogers Kirk in Davenport, Iowa. She was a choir member, and as the Sunday School secretary, she wrote minutes and handled Sunday School supplies. She was active with the church bazaar where she organized crafts, bake goods, and assisted with quilt displays. Genevieve dearly loved helping people and reaching out to her community. She organized PTA parent meetings and school events at Frances Willard Elementary School in Rock Island and helped organized Girl Scout activities.

Survivors include her daughter, Sheila Renee Wilson; grandchildren, Larell Wash, Makayla Wilson, Tavian Wilson, and Keana Smith; and great-grandchildren, Elijah Robertson and Ezekiel Robertson.

Genevieve was preceded in death by her husband, Elijah Kenneth Wilson, parents, Percy Currie and Myrtle Edwards Currie. Sisters, Geraldine Currie Lampley, and Jessie Edwards Deaton. Brothers, Edward Currie, Norman Currie, Tommy Currie, and Arussel Currie. Nephew, Thomas Currie. Sisters-in-law, Doris Currie, Lesteen Currie, and Anner Lee Currie.

Family and friends are welcome to attend the visitation and funeral service of Mrs. Genevieve Currie Wilson on Saturday, September 25, 2021, at the KNOX CHAPEL of Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 2106 7th Avenue in Rock Island, Illinois. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., and the service will promptly start at 2:00 p.m. A private interment will be held on Monday, September 27th at the Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island.
