Hazel Holloway Obituary

HAZEL MAE HOLLOWAY, (better known as Grandma Sugar Pie), went home to be with her Lord Tuesday, November 12, 2019. She is now re-united with her beloved husband, Averill, who passed in 2014.  Visitation will be at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 201 E. 4th Ave., Milan from 2pm – 4pm on Sunday, November 17. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 18 at the funeral home, with Pastor Cory Gonyo officiating. Burial service will follow at Chapel Grove Cemetery, Taylor Ridge, Ill.

Hazel was born to Guy & Bertha (Hollowell) Albertson on August 17, 1927.  She grew up on a farm with ten brothers and sisters around Milan and Taylor Ridge. When she was 16 she moved to Rock Island and went to work in the office at Burtmon Electric.  Her brother, Glen, brought home a friend from Texas, where he was stationed, and they married in July 1945 in San Antonio. They bought the small brown house in Rock Island; had three children and moved to Orion some years later - living there till 2016 - then moved to Bettendorf to live with her son and his wife (Kathy).

Survived by children, Linda (Junior) Taets, Allen (Kathy) Holloway & Karen (Bruce) Sturm; grandchildren Jay, Brandy & Chris; Jennifer & Misty; Amber, Jason & Brittney; great-grandchildren; Hillary, Abigail, Devon, Danielle, Delaney, Nicole & Allison; Payton, Emma & Quinton; Lyndsey & Taylor; siblings, Leland, Harold and Harlan Albertson, Norma Wangelin and Margie Souza; and numerous nieces, nephews, and additional family.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Averill, her parents and siblings – Glen and Lloyd Albertson, Helen Brown, Doris Mader and Gertude “Gertie” Carey.

For the largest part of Hazel’s life, she was a wife, mother, grandmother who loved, raised, supported and nurtured all who came into her home, but she also had a few jobs at Don Rudd’s Laundromat and Rock Island Sale Barn over the years. She had eight grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren, who she loved and spoiled and watched and taught and fed who will greatly miss their “Grandma Sugar Pie”.  So many memories over holiday meals, but also just day to day visits are ours to hold on to forever.  Those of us that know her well know that she is out already planting her flowers or inside cooking up some of those great meals she is so well known for at the Lords’ table even now.

Rest in Peace Mom; you will be missed, but we will see you again one fine day…Love you!
