Julia M. "Julie" (Gunnell) Werthmann

Julia M. “Julie” Werthmann, 72, of Rock Island, died Thursday, July 19, 2018 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.  A memorial visitation will be Monday from 12-1 p.m. at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island.  Inurnment will be private at Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island.  Memorials may be made in care of River Action, Davenport.

Julie was born in Rock Island on December 15, 1945, a daughter of Eugene D. and Elsie M. DeWulf Gunnell.  She graduated from Rock Island High School in 1963.  She then earned her bachelor’s degree from Western Illinois University where she majored in Geology and Anthropology.

Julie married James H. Chance in July of 1970.  They had a daughter together and later divorced.  She later married Mike Werthmann.  They divorced.

Julie taught for a year before working 27 years at John Deere and Company, retiring in 2000.

She was a member of the Citizens to Preserve Blackhawk Park Foundation at the Blackhawk Historic Site and the Quad Cities Natural Area Guardians.  Julie volunteered for River Action, Davenport and the Rock Island County Soil and Water Conservation District.  She was a master gardener and enjoyed forest restoration and water sports.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter and son-in-law, Angela and Mike Hughes, East Moline; 2 grandchildren, Julia and Joshua Hughes; brother, David E. (Kris) Gunnell, Peoria; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
