Laura Coyle Obituary

Laura Therese Coyle was born Laura T. Holland in L’Anse, Michigan on October 5th, 1928. The family moved to Rock Island where many immigrant families (her mother was French Canadian, her father from Irish stock) came to the area to work at the Farmall plant.  The 8th of 9 children, she would spend her adolescence with her younger brother during WWII as her sisters worked and her brothers (and brothers-in-law) went off to war. Living through the depression and WWII, Laura grew up in the Keystone neighborhood of Rock Island. She attended Sacred Heart School through 8th grade and graduated high school from St. Joe’s. The summer of her high school graduation, 1947, she and her best friend (her future sister-in-law) spent the summer in Chicago, working, sleeping (and partying!), on a ferry boat that left daily from downtown Chicago to St. Joseph/Benton Harbor, Michigan. She then entered nursing school at St. Anthony’s. After graduating in 1951 she began a nursing internship in New York City at the Poly Clinic, doing rotations at several city hospitals in all specialties, including Bellevue. She loved telling stories of her rotations and all the things she and her nursing colleagues experienced in the city. Laura was the first in her family to attend post-secondary school, inspiring many in our families’ future generations to seek out higher education and focus on helping others. She went on to a long and varied nursing career, working in many hospitals and becoming one of the first industrial nurses. Her later career years saw her providing home medical care until late in her life (she was older than most of her patients!) as well as hospice care and eucharistic ministry. Mrs. Coyle was widely revered as a nurturing caretaker who provided medical care and comfort to anyone in need. Numerous times she was called upon by neighbors to provide emergency medical care for themselves and their children.

Laura Holland married James A. Coyle of Moline fame in 1953. They raised 4 children and while they spent a few early years in Chicago and the east coast, home was Rock Island in the close knit blocks of family and friends a few doors from where she grew up. A devout Catholic, they attended Sacred Heart Church in Rock Island and all their children attended and graduated from Sacred Heart and Alleman High School. Growing up in a large family, Mrs. Coyle was dedicated to her family; her sisters and brothers being her best friends. She loved family gatherings, bringing together what she held most dear, her family and food.

Laura spent her last years at her daughter Mary’s house in Cleveland. There she was surrounded by the love and care of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Laura represents an end to a great era in the development of the Quad Cities, where men and women of pioneer stock, from various lands, ascended onto the area to work hard and raise devoted families.

She is survived by her children; Michael (Andrea) Coyle, Mary (Gary) Von Hoch and Tim (Dana) Coyle, grandchildren; Sara, Shannon, Erik, Amanda, Sean, Jamie, Teagan, Caitlin and Mac, and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband James A. Coyle, daughter Paula (Gary) Boden, parents Paul & Anna (nee Goulet) Holland, all of her siblings; Jerome, Hyacinth (Price), Gerald, Clarence, Paul Jr., Marie (Stimac), Patricia (Woeber) and William, and several nieces and nephews.
