Mary Gail DeSmet, 95, of Rock Island, Ill., passed away Wednesday December 2, 2020 at Hope Creek Care Center, East Moline.

Livestreamed services will be 1:00pm Monday December 7, 2020 and may be viewed at www.wheelanpressly.com/live-stream. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island, is assisting the family with arrangements. Memorials may be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island.

Gail was born September 28, 1925 in Wakefield, Nebraska, a daughter of Elmer and Ruth Campbell Kimbell. She married Clarence George DeSmet on December 15, 1945 in Rock Island. Clarence and Gail were married for 63 years. He preceded her in death on May 14, 2009.

Gail worked at Gellman Manufacturing Co. and later was a homemaker. Her greatest love in life was her family. She will be lovingly remembered as a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother.

She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island, and a past member of Circle Five and a Girl Scout leader.

Survivors include her daughter, Judith Ann Porter, East Moline; son, James E. DeSmet, and his wife Marie; Preemption; grandchildren (and spouses), Brian (Amy) Porter, St. Louis, Mo., Eric Porter, Rapids City, Nikki Leigh (Seth) Brooks, Carrollton, TX., Jason (Meggie) Porter, Port Byron, Sarah (Forrest Goodman) Porter, Minneapolis, MN, Amy (Frank) Benac, Milan, Ill.,   Lori (Sean) Bahen, Reynolds, Ill., Daniel (Candace) DeSmet, Illinois City and Scott (Jennifer) DeSmet, Davenport, Iowa; great-grandchildren, Nathan, Ashleigh, Katie, Brooke, Benjamin, Isaiah, Isla, Emmy, Megan, Ryan, Jordan, Breanna, Emma, Daniel, Molly, Annabelle, Ian, Natalie; 1 great-great grandchild on the way; sister, Helen “Shirley” Johnston, East Moline, Ill.; brother, Glenn Kimbell, Rock Island; and many nieces, nephews, and other family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence; parents Elmer and Ruth; sisters, Lorraine and Joyce and brother, Donald.
