"Pat" Hartmann
July 3, 1927 – August 17, 2015
Patricia A. Hartmann, 88, of Milan, also known as "Pat" and "Mormor," passed away Monday, Aug. 17, 2015, after a full life. Services for Pat will be at 10 am, Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Rock Island. Visitation will be 2 to 5 pm, Sunday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan, beginning with reciting of the rosary at 2pm at the funeral home. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to the St. Mary Catholic Church, Rock Island or the Royal Ball Run, Milan.
Pat was born on July 3, 1927 in Moline, the daughter of Lawrence C. Conner and Esther K. Karlson. The close proximity of her birthday to the Fourth of July holiday never got past Pat, who always felt the fireworks were a special treat put on for her. Pat was raised by her mother and her step-father, Elmer E. V. Johnson. She married Marshall Hartmann August 16, 1947 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church of Milan, Il. Patricia soon earned the title of mother at the birth of Michael "Mike" and Christopher "Chris" Hartmann. She held membership at St. Mary Catholic Church in Rock Island. Patricia always liked to keep busy, whether that included caring for her family, holding membership in various clubs (Big Island Birthday Club; Blackhawk Chapter of Home Extension; "Wilo Bees" of Milan's St. Ambrose Church; Daughters of Isabella, Circle No. 532; and the Alter and Rosary Society of the church), or working outside in her garden. Even though she was 88 years old, Pat continued to spend hours of her day outside, much to the trepidation of those caring for her. She never slowed down. Patricia kept track of the plethora of anniversaries and birthdays, and made sure to have a card to send for each, even if that meant spending numerous hours in the Hallmark store, deliberately picking out each and every card. "Hours" is not merely an exaggeration. If Pat went to the Hallmark store to pick you out a card, she was going to go through five cards minimum before she made her selection.
At her house, no child or dog left without a treat. Her in-house specialties were butterfly sandwiches, apple salad, "Pillows" and "O's". She had a love of 1940s big band music and soulful opera, playing her music throughout the house as she got ready. Speaking of which, she was always dolled up. It did not matter the occasion. Trips to the hospital were halted if she realized she had yet to put on her lipstick or brush her hair, even if she looked beautiful without. Her beauty shined through with her smiles, her love, her tenacity, her laughter and her strong sense of humor. She knew that sometimes life can be "for the birds," but it did not stop her from being a caring woman who never hesitated to take those she loved under her wing.
She leaves behind a full family: son, Michael Hartmann, Milan; grandchildren Gail (Bryon) Gant, Pat (Jen) Hartmann, Charlotte (Shawn) Johnson, Kathy (Casey) Creger, Daniel Hartmann, all of Milan; Maribeth (Nick) Havemann, Rock Island; and Jonathan Hartmann, East Moline. She also is survived by her numerous great-grandchildren.
Pat was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, Marshall W. Hartmann on May 12, 1999; son, Christopher Hartmann; and a brother, Dean Conner. Online condolences may be left for the family at wheelanpressly.com."
