Sister Mary Magdalene “Maggie” Buergler, OSB, 86, of St. Mary Monastery, Rock Island, IL, passed away Saturday, August 6, 2022 at the Monastery.
A Mass of Christian burial will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 11, in the Chapel of St. Mary Monastery, Rock Island. The Mass will be live streamed through the Benedictine Sisters of St. Mary Monastery Facebook page. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 10, at the monastery, with a Christian wake service at 7:00 p.m. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Milan, IL, is assisting with arrangements. Memorials may be made to St. Mary Monastery, Rock Island.
Mary Frances Buergler was born July 9, 1936 in Fort Smith, AR, a daughter of Martin and Frances Leding Buergler. She entered the Benedictine Community at St. Scholastica Monastery, Fort Smith, AR, in 1952. She made her profession as a Benedictine Sister on June 24, 1955. Sister Maggie transferred to Our Lady of Peace Monastery at its establishment in 1969, and upon its closure, to St. Mary Monastery in 2010.
Sister Maggie received her BA in Elementary Education in 1970 from Incarnate Word College, San Antonio, TX, MA in Special Education in 1979 from Cardinal Stritch College, Milwaukee, WI, and MA in Pastoral Ministry, with minor in Counseling, in 1985 from Seattle University.
Sister Maggie’s ministry included, teacher of grades 1 – 6 in Arkansas and Missouri, teacher of those with Special needs from pre-school to adults in Missouri and Maryland, pastoral ministry in parishes, and Coordinator of retreat ministry in Columbia, MO
She is survived by her Benedictine Sisters; her brother, Bede and sister-in-law, Maryann, sister-in-law, Betty (Ben) Buergler; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
Sister Maggie was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers Father Luke, OSB, Abbot Boniface, OSB and Ben.
