A. Duncan Reid, 80, of Rock Island, died Sunday, Nov. 13, 2016 at the home of his son and daughter-in-law in Bettendorf. Funeral services are 10:00 am on Saturday in the Fieldhouse of Rock Island High School. Burial is at Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation is 4 to 8 pm Friday in the Fieldhouse. Memorials may be made to Grace Fellowship Church, 4227 W. Kimberly Rd., Davenport, IA 52806. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island, is assisting the family. Duncan Reid was born April 30, 1936 in Chicago, a son of Archie D. and Elizabeth Huddelson Reid. He married Sandra S. Smith on August 23, 1958 in Collinsville, Ill. Duncan graduated from Pimento High School, Pimento, Ind., where he played basketball, baseball and ran track. He attended Millikin University, Decatur, Ill., where he played basketball and was a member of the track team. Duncan graduated in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He received a Master's degree from Bradley University, Peoria, Ill., and had 30 additional hours towards a doctorial degree. He began his teaching and coaching career at Pekin High School, Pekin, Ill., serving as assistant basketball coach and physical education teacher. The team won the State Championship in 1964. He joined the basketball program at Lincoln High School, Lincoln, Ill., in 1965 and after eight years joined the coaching staff at the University of Kansas. At Kansas, he served as assistant to Ted Owens and saw the team reach the NCAA final four. He later served as head coach at Dodge City Community College, Dodge City, Kan., before coming to Rock Island in 1980. Duncan served as head basketball coach, a Dean of Students and an Administrator during his 21 year career at Rock Island. He retired from coaching in 2001 with a 469 -145 record. In retirement, Duncan worked nine years as Director of Outreach for Blackhawk Bank and Trust, Milan. Duncan was a member of Grace Fellowship Church, Davenport, and more importantly, The Kingdom of God. He was a member of the Millikin University Athletics Hall of Fame, the Quad-City Sports Hall of Fame and the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. He was a past president and member of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association and past president and member of the Rock Island Kiwanis Club. He supported Habitat for Humanity. In addition to loving his God, Duncan had a great love for his family and enjoyed playing golf. Survivors include his wife, Sandy; sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Brenda Reid, Rincon, Ga., Mike and Emily Reid, Bettendorf, and Bill and Candace Reid, Zionsville, Ind.; grandchildren, Kristin (Tyler) Wood, Eric (Laura) Reid, Alex (Mckenzie) Reid, Jimmy (Allison) Reid, Austin (Haylie) Reid, Sarah Reid, Nick Reid, Tanner Reid, Jack Reid, Sophia Reid, Morgan Reid and Taylor Reid; and great grandchildren, Elijah Reid, Norah Wood, Ellis Reid and Evey Reid.
