Sandy, I remember so well in the summer of 1960 when Coach Reid started freshman basketball for Pekin. We had weight jackets of canvas that you had made and he told us to wear them to build up strength. I have to call him Coach Reid because I would never be comfortable calling him Duncan since he was always Coach Reid. The success of Pekin High School in the !960's was largely due to his mentoring of the underclass teams. He was not only a coach but also a teacher; The fundamentals were important to him and he imparted that to each of us. One of the great characters of Illinois High School Basketball, just the mention of his name brought an acknowledgement of his unique and special persona. You too were a big part of this tradition and I hope all the good memories you have will grow richer as time passes. The last time I visited Rock Island when they played Pekin years ago is still a reflective memory that I so cherish. To you and your family always.

Dear Sandy and Family,

As you can appreciate Duncan enjoyed seeing my reactions to his various attempts to "floor a 21 year old first year farm- boy teacher" in Lincoln Community High School in 1968. He was certainly successful many times over.

I had an admiration for his dedication to his coaching profession and the athletes he coached.

After five years in my teaching and coaching profession, the Lord changed the direction of my life and gave my wife and I thirty special years serving Him as Church Planting Missionaries among the precious people of the Island Nation of Papua New Guinea.

In 2015, I was able reconnect with Duncan via telephone. What an overwhelming joy to learn that Duncan had come to know the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior. He obviously loved the Lord and was living for him with his usual zeal and his 100% plus way.

I was surprised to learn of Duncan's "Home Going." However I am so thankful he has gone to be with the Lord and awaits those in his precious family who have or who will receive His Lord as their Savior also.

" TO GOD BE THE GLORY GREAT THINGS HE HAS DONE."

May each of you know the Abiding Comfort that only our Lord Jesus Christ can give in times like this.

A Sincere Friend and Brother in Christ,

Jerry Williams

So sorry for your loss. It was an honor to play against the Rock Island Rocks coached by Duncan Reid. We always knew we were in for a fight from a well-coached team - The Westen Big Six hasn't been the same since the coaches from the 90's and early 2000's left the conference. Thank you for being a memorable part of my childhood.

It warms my heart to know you followed Jesus Christ - you're in paradise now with no pain. Knowing Jesus is fully living.

My condolences for the loss but knowing that one day we will all be together again is a joyful promise for our faith in an almighty and loving God..
Many Blessings,

My thoughts are prayers are with the entire Reid family. Coach Reid and basketball were such a big parts of Eric's life. I remember all the camps and games, and there were many! Duncan truly gave so much of himself to all the young men he coached. He will always have a place in my heart for the love of the game he gave to my son. Rest in peace and be forever with our Lord, Jesus Christ. You guys are probably playing basketball in heaven right now....Eric winning of course.

To the family ... you father was a remarkable man. He could get the best out of even the most difficult with whom to work. He was a star performer who produced great results. His memories will be held up for many years to come. Blessings in your pain and sorrow. As he would challenge you to do, grab onto that promise and hope of the eternal glory in the Lord and Savior, and with it draw a deep breath and find that smile of hope in Jesus Christ.

I am sadden at the loss of Coach Reid. He inspired me to play basketball during his first year of coaching at Lincoln. Being an outstanding coach he was a great human being. Numerous times he had given me rides to my home. Along the way he would always give me encouragement to keep doing a good job. He was all most a father to me. I know that if the team in 1966 would of had Coach Reid for our 4 years we would have gone to state. He was a great teacher. I hope when my time comes that I will see Duncan. God bless Coach Reid.

Ms. Reid, Steve, Mike, Bill and family members of Duncan Reid...I would like to express my condolences to you all during this difficult time . I worked with Coach Reid in the early 80's while Mike was at Rocky and coached Billy at Washington Middle School. Great memories and I learned a lot from him. I became a Head Basketball Coach in Houston and also won over 400 games running the Flex Offense your Dad called " The Rub". Thoughts and prayers.

To the Reid Family,

Our most sincere condolences sent to you as you lost "your hero" of many years. We know this is quite a journey, however the God that Duncan knows will help you through this most challenging moment in time. Duncan touched and impacted the lives of many and today we stand with you in paying honor and respect to him first of all as a man and then to the basketball legacy he leaves. He absolutely loved the game and Aaron often times talks about his experiences and the years of playing for Coach Duncan Reid.
Our family will continue to pray for your family and we thank you for sharing Duncan with our community.

To God Be The Glory for all He has done in Duncan. Now Duncan is finally "home" where he belongs and is no longer suffering but rather rejoicing with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. What a mighty God we serve!!!

In Deepest Sympathy,
Linda K. Dothard

Duncan was a wonderful person, always willing to help and motivate others. My memories of him date back to high school where he was my driver's ed instructor. I would see him and speak with him periodically over the years and he always remained so humorous and kind hearted, greeting me with a giant hug each and every time. Seeing him later in life, as he became a man closer to God, truly made my heart smile. It was very encouraging seeing the way he genuinely loved his wife and his family even more as he continued pursuing his relationship with Christ.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family, I love you all.

The Slusser family (Randy, Mary and Carolyn) send our deepest sympathies. We also want to express our gratitude to Coach Reid for all the joy he brought to our lives. As hardcore Rocky basketball fans he made our program a joy to watch. The young men he coached played the game the right way, because that was the only way he would allow them to play, and we had so many fun nights going the games. But we have as much or more gratitude for the joy Coach brought to my Dad. He was a long time Rocky basketball fan and he suffered in the two years before Coach Reid came. So it was a great blessing to him when Coach turned the program around. In later years, my Mom suffered from COPD and he was her chief caregiver. His main ways to relieve stress were walking at Sunset park and Rocky basketball. It really helped him cope and brought him so much joy. She passed away in 2001, and he followed her in 2002 but we have no doubt Coach helped him do what he had to do.

God bless your family, we were blessed to have Coach Reid.

I AM A COACH

I'm a coach, my name is Reid, I'm the bestest coach you've ever see'd.
I never argue, fuss or fight, if the referee yells 'foul', of course he's right.
I'm cool and calm and quite collected, no wonder I'm so well respected.

All jest aside, I am a coach, and I work hard everyday,
To turn young boys into young men, by teaching them fair play.
My methods may seem stern to some, my standards may seem high,
But it matters not what some may think, if I can teach these boys to try.

To try to be the best they can, in everything they do,
And show respect for God and man, and to themselves be true.
When they choose careers and go their way, I hope that they can say,
We had a coach who did his best by teaching us fair play.

For Duncan Reid, Sandy's thoughts about her husband.

He was visiting at our house and talking about how he could not understand how anyone could miss a free throw shot. He said, " I can do them blindfolded." We then all went out to the drive, blindfolded him and he proceeded to drop 10 in a row. Nothing but net. He was a man of his word and was fair and honest to all. I think that he may see a smile on our Lords face upon arrival. He made a huge difference in so many young lives. God bless you and your families
