A Personal Perspective on Preplanning a Funeral

Published: February 15, 2024

Death is inevitably a part of life, and while discussing it may feel uncomfortable, preplanning a funeral can alleviate a significant burden from loved ones during an already challenging time. It's an act of consideration, ensuring your final wishes are honored while providing clarity and guidance for those you leave behind.

We spoke with one of our clients about the process of preplanning his funeral to understand its significance and the steps involved:

“The decision to preplan my funeral didn't come overnight. It was a gradual realization that I needed to take proactive steps to ensure my final wishes are honored, and I didn’t want to leave the burden to my loved ones. I wanted to understand all my options and make informed decisions about my funeral arrangements. So, I consulted with funeral directors, visited funeral homes, and explored different services and packages available.

Eventually, I sat down with the Pre-need Funeral Counselor at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home. She offered guidance on various aspects of funeral planning such as burial or cremationcasket or urn selection, service preferences, and financial considerations—helping me navigate the myriad of choices and considerations involved.

Documenting my preferences was a crucial part of preplanning. I wanted to make sure that every detail of my funeral reflected my wishes and values. From deciding on the location and format of the service to specifying religious and cultural rituals, we meticulously documented every aspect so that nothing was overlooked. She also helped me navigate the legal requirements and made sure all necessary arrangements were in place.

Financial considerations weighed heavily on my mind. I didn’t want my funeral to impose a significant financial burden on my family. Prepayment options offered a solution, allowing me to lock in current prices and ease the financial strain on my loved ones. Together, we explored various payment plans and options, ensuring that everything was taken care of in advance.

Navigating the legal and administrative tasks was another aspect of preplanning. The Pre-need Funeral Counselor guided me through these processes, including compliance with legal requirements, and providing peace of mind that I would have everything taken care of. After our meeting, I drafted a will, specified power of attorney and healthcare directives, and put all necessary paperwork in order.

Communication was key throughout the pre-planning process. I wanted to confirm that my family was aware of my wishes and that there was no confusion or misunderstanding when the time came. Clear documentation outlining my preferences and instructions were provided to my loved ones so that everyone was on the same page and my wishes would be honored.

The Pre-need Funeral Counselor explained that preferences and circumstances might change over time. Regular reviews and updates will also be a part of my preplanning process to make sure that my funeral arrangements remain relevant and reflect my wishes. So, I may need to review my preplanned funeral arrangements periodically and make any necessary updates.

Preplanning my funeral has brought me a profound sense of peace and comfort. Knowing that my final wishes are documented, and arrangements are in place assures me that everything will be taken care of when the time comes. It's a gift not only to myself but also to my family, sparing them from the burden of making difficult decisions during a time of grief.”

Preplanning a funeral can be a deeply personal and meaningful journey. It's a decision rooted in consideration and love for family. And it's a decision that brings peace of mind, knowing that your final wishes will be honored, and your loved ones will be spared from unnecessary stress and uncertainty when the time comes.
